Barrier packaging is used when the product inside needs protection from aroma, flavor, gas, light, oil, oxygen, water, or water vapor. Various types of materials including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) are available. PE and PP materials provide a moisture barrier. Typical PE applications include breathable packaging for fresh produce or carton lining. PP is used for thermoforming and microwavable packaging. PET material provides a gas and aroma barrier as well as a moisture barrier. It is most commonly used for plastic bottling, meat and cheese packaging, snack food wrappers, boil-in-bag, or serializable pouches. EVOH provides an oxygen, gas and aroma barrier. It is a modified atmosphere packaging for oxygen-sensitive foods. Kelley Supply offers a variety of barrier products including 640 liners, barrel liners, block bags, bulk packaging, shred film, shrink bags, tower bags, and vacuum pouches.
